I have been a single mom for almost 20 years. My kids were 3, 7, 12 and 14 when my ex left.As a single mom, it's often hard because you are the only one to deal with the children. Although, this can often be a blessing as well. There is no one for them to play against you.Often you second guess yourself and wonder if what you are doing is right. There are times when you are and there are times when you aren't. Overall, you have to do the best you can do. This poem was written when I was second guessing myself.Children learn what they live, that's what they say, what are my...
If your child is to derive the benefits of physical fitness, then physical activity must be habitual and lifelong. Moving should be as routine as brushing teeth and bathing. But this is only likely to happen if: 1. Physical activity is a habit of yours and of your familys. 2. Its associated with pleasure rather than pain!A pleasant association is most likely to happen if you:* Choose individual and family activities that fit easily into your lifestyle.* Select activities that are within your physical capabilities and those of your family members.* Pace activities with fun, rather than heart rates, in mind.* Dont worry about scheduling; consistency is important, but its okay to be flexible.* Encourage one another, pointing out...
Bedwetting (Enuresis) is the involuntary passage of urine during sleep and is a very common problem among children. At least one out of ten kids below the age of 6-years has this problem, but the good news is the ratio of kids' bedwetting goes down as they grow older. Only one out 20 is affected up to the age of 10, though there are infrequent cases of bedwetting by youths as old as 18. Only 1% of the children carry this problem to the age of 18.Most bedwetting children possess a small bladder that cannot hold all the urine produced during the night and/or an inherited deficiency. In addition, some kids and in rarer cases teens are deep sleepers who...
There is nothing new under the sun, states Ecclesiastes 1:9. This is certainly true of the nature-nurture debate, the modern name for the ageless argument about the importance of learning in the development of the child. While one side argues that the development of the child is mainly a process of maturation, with learning playing no more than a supportive role, the other side maintains that learning determines the entire course of a childs future. The wise king Solomon certainly supported the nurture assumption when he stated in Proverbs 22:6, Train the child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. The famous French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau, on the other hand,...
Did you know that a child is reported abducted or missing every 40 seconds in the United States and that most potential abductors make their first contact with the children they abduct within one quarter of a mile from their homes? With summer approaching and children having more time to play with friends during the day, it is now more important than ever to start (or continue) giving your children the tools they need to protect themselves: Never leave young children unattended anywhere and have older children practice a buddy system with their peers. Teach your children their full name, your name, your address and telephone number. Teach them how to dial and use 911 or your equivalent emergency number. Teach...

This is another installment in our series of mini-articles on Language Acquisition.Although it is commonly believed that children acquire a Second language quickly and effectively, research shows that the same could be the case with adults, given certain conditions. The wealth of evidence clearly demonstrates that there is by no means any biologically determined constraint on the language learning capacity that emerges at a particular age, nor any maturational process which requires that older language learners function differently than younger language learners. This of course does not imply that younger and older learners acquire the language in precisely the same way. Every stage of your life has different advantages and disadvantages, and the same applies to language acquisition. For example, older learners...
Raising a pre-teen or teenage daughter (or son) is not easy and can cause any parent a lot of stress. Theres so much to worry about dating, drugs, alcohol, sex, school grades, just to name a few. But one crucial element often gets overlooked until it manifests itself in extreme ways (like through an eating disorder). Im talking about self-image. Its extremely important that parents ensure that their children have a positive self-image, especially in relation to their body. The key to ensuring strong self-esteem and a positive body image starts with the parent. If you dont feel positive about your self-image, then how can you expect your children to? While this is important for both genders, it...
When planning a child birthday party, just a little bit of organisation will go a long way. A good selection of child party games will keep the group interested and the party running smoothly. Always keep in mind that during the course of the day the weather may turn against you so be prepared to move the party (and games) indoors if necessary!Have an idea of how you would like the party to flow- a typical choice would be: some games or a party craft to start, a break for food and cake, and then some more games or free play to wind up the party. Depending on the location for your party it may be only indoor games or...
Whether children attend public or private schools, they benefit when parents become involved in their education. According to the National Institute for Literacy, when parents or other family members frequently read to children entering kindergarten, those children were at a distinct advantage over children whose families read to them less often. The Early Childhood Longitudinal Study found that "Children who were read to at least three times a week by a family member were almost twice as likely to score in the top 25 percent in reading than children who were read to less than three times a week." The study also found that, of children who were read to at least three times a week: * 76 percent had mastered the...
